If the 1950’s had a soundtrack, it would be sung by Frank Sinatra.
Francis Albert Sinatra, also known as “Ol’ Blue Eyes” for his bright blue eyes, was one of the most influential and popular entertainers of the 20th century. The only child of Italian immigrants, Frank Sinatra was born on December 12, 1915, in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Frank developed an interest in music at a very young age. A big fan of jazz music, Sinatra idolized Bing Crosby. His admiration turned to inspiration and Frank began performing in front of other people by the time he was 15. He eventually caught the eye of Tommy Dorsey who invited Sinatra to join his band. After finding some success performing alongside Dorsey, Sinatra finally decided to try his luck as a solo artist.
Between 1943 and 1946, his solo career began to thrive. Declared unfit for military service due to a punctured eardrum, Frank spent much of the 1940s acting in a slew of movies and shorts. Around the end of the 1940s however, Frank began to fall out of popularity and lost most of his recording and movie contracts.
But in 1953, Frank Sinatra returned to stardom by winning the supporting actor Oscar for his role in From Here to Eternity. Frank also made a comeback as a singer, returning with a more mature and jazzier voice that would forever earn him his place as an icon of the 20th century.
Few people have ever been as candid about life as Frank was. He lived and loved with an almost boyish abandon that made him endearing to his loved ones and fans. In the memory of the Sultan of Swoon, here are a few Frank Sinatra quotes to give your life a leg-up.
17 exceptional Frank Sinatra quotes on living life to the fullest
1. “What I do with my life is of my own doing. I live it the best way I can.”
We are responsible for our own lives. Nobody else can change it unless we allow them to. Stop dreaming about living a better life and start living it. Nothing is stopping you!
2. “If you possess something but you can’t give it away, then you don’t possess it… it possesses you.”
Don’t let material possessions control your life. Queuing up for the latest iPhone does not make you an innovator like Apple would have you believe. It just makes it apparent that you are letting something unimportant dictate your priorities.
3. “I’m going to be the best singer in the World… the best singer that ever was.”
Aim for the impossible. Having ambitious goals not only gives you something amazing to work towards, it also always keeps you humble. Besides, aiming to be the best isn’t bad. Even if you fail, with all the effort you put in, you will still end up being really good at what you were aiming for.
4. “A simple ‘I love you’ means more than money.”
Be more verbal about your affections. Tell the people important to you that you love them. You do not need special occasions to just say these three words. You will regret not saying it enough once they’re gone.
5. “The best revenge is massive success.”
Don’t let the people who dislike you affect you. We only give them power over us by worrying about what they say or think about us. Spending time thinking of how best to retaliate against their toxicity is a waste of your time. The best way to get back at these people is by becoming a success.
6. “I believe in you and me. I’m like Albert Schweitzer and Bertrand Russell and Albert Einstein in that I have a respect for life–in any form.”
Be respectful of others. Everybody in the world owes a basic level of respect just for being a fellow human being. You don’t have to be a doormat. Just accept them for who they are and treat them how you wish other people would treat you.
7. “It’s one world, pal. We’re all neighbors.”
We are all of us unique. And although, we might not always agree with each other, we should learn to respect each other despite our differences. Because in the end, we are all human beings.
8. “I would like to be remembered as a man who had a wonderful time living his life, and who had good friends, a fine family. I don’t think I could ask for anything more than that, actually.”
At the end of the day, the people who should matter the most are the people who care about you. Even happiness feels hollow without wonderful people to share it with. Cherish these people while they are still around.
9. “The cigarettes you light one after another won’t help you forget her.”
People cope with loss in different ways. But that doesn’t mean that there is no wrong way. Abusing substances, for example, is a terrible way to cope with unresolved grief. Not only does it harm your health, it does not take away your emotional pain either. Talk to people who care about you or get professional help instead.
10. “The big lesson in life, baby, is never be scared of anyone or anything.”
Life can be pretty scary at times. Don’t let it be. When you live in constant fear of things, you shut yourself out from many amazing experiences. On the other hand, adopting the right attitude and taking calculated risks can make life much more fun.
11. “I’m not one of those complicated, mixed-up cats. I’m not looking for the secret to life… I just go on from day to day, taking what comes.”
Dwelling on the future complicates your life more than it should. Living in the moment is the only way to enjoy your life to the fullest. Let life surprise you!
12. “Fear is the enemy of logic.”
Fear has made people make stupid mistakes throughout history. It is because we have conditioned to respond to fear by fighting it out or fleeing it. And such a rash response, though it served our ancestors well, is not often applicable to modern society.
Stop ‘reacting’ to your fears. Instead, try to understand them and ‘act’ accordingly after giving it some thought. Don’t let your fears make you do something you will regret.
13. “The place isn’t important, as long as everybody has a good time.”
Learn to sort out what is important and what isn’t. Your time is of great value and being too uptight about every detail will only put a damper on any event. Relax. Everything does not need to be perfect for anything to be fun.
14. “Don’t hide your scars. They make you who you are.”
You don’t have to be proud of who you were in the past. But don’t go out of your way to erase that bit of history. Everything that has happened made you who you are today. Instead, always remember your past and learn from the mistakes you have made.
15. “Dare to wear the foolish clown face.”
Being able to laugh at yourself is the surest sign of an optimistic personality. And the best thing is, it can be learned. Don’t take yourself too seriously and learn to laugh at yourself, occasionally. Not only does it discourage unjustified criticism from others, it also shows that you have a sense of humor – which is always a good thing.
16. “A friend is never an imposition.”
Human beings are social creatures. We need the company of others and so we surround ourselves with people we call friends. But some of these people may actually be affecting our lives negatively.
Learn to identify them. Does your ‘friend’ dampen your spirits? Does spending time with this ‘friend’ feel like a terrible chore rather than a fun activity? If you answered ‘yes’, chances are that they are not actually your friend. Remove them from your life and surround yourself with people who actually uplift and inspire you to be a better person.
17. “I’m gonna live till I die.”
Everyone dies eventually. That is why we should learn to love life. Get the most enjoyment you can from everything that life throws your way. What’s the point of being alive if you are not going to live it to its fullest?
Frank Sinatra succumbed to a heart attack on May 1998 in Los Angeles, California. He was buried next to his parents in Desert Memorial Park in a blue business suit.
Frank Sinatra was many things – a singer, an actor, a producer, a lover, and an overall good man. But above all, the world will remember him as a legend. May his spirit find peace and rest.
