1. Be Confident

You can try changing the topic if you find an opportunity, but don’t force it.

4. Listen


This is where most people fail. A conversation is not possible if only one side is doing all the talking. It’s as important to listen as it is to talk. Don’t be in a hurry to ask the next question that pops in your head, or to share your opinion on the matter. Wait and pay attention to what is being said. If the person who is talking feels like you aren’t listening, they will not engage themselves in further conversation with you.

Listening goes both ways. When you are talking, the other person too should listen to you. If you feel like you are being ignored and they start talking over you, it’s okay to move on to another conversation. They’re not worth your time.

5. Change Topics; Find Common Ground


When talking with new people, it’s good to find something in common. Once you have gone over the necessary introductions, bring out topics you are interested in. Try to see if you have anything in common. When two people find a similar interest or hobby, the rest of the time is going to pass by quickly. You can make new friends this way; they aren’t going to present themselves to you in a box with a ribbon on it. You have to go out and see who you are compatible with.

Thinking of topics that you could discuss with a new person can be confusing. You never know what you should talk about next. Go through a list of conversation starters beforehand; they might come in handy.

6. Maintain Eye Contact and Good Posture
